Is Mostbet legal in India?

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act was passed by Parliament in August 2025 and received Presidential assent on 22 August 2025. The government notified its commencement and the Online Gaming Rules, 2026 from 1 May 2026 and set up the Online Gaming Authority of India to supervise the sector.

The Act splits online games into three groups. E-sports and online social games, played without real-money stakes, are allowed and promoted. Online money games, where a player deposits money expecting to win more, are prohibited completely, whether they are based on skill or chance. Sports betting, online casino, crash games such as Aviator and real-money card games all fall into this prohibited group.

Category under the ActExamplesStatus
E-sportsCompetitive video game tournamentsAllowed, recognised as sport
Online social gamesFree-to-play and subscription games without money stakesAllowed
Online money gamesSports betting, online casino, Aviator, paid fantasy and rummy contestsProhibited

The ban covers services operated from abroad if they are accessible in India, so an offshore licence does not make a site legal for Indian users.

Who the law targets: operators, promoters and payments

The penalties are aimed at the supply side. Offering online money games can lead to up to three years in prison and a fine of up to ₹1 crore. Advertising and promoting such games, and processing payments for them, are separate offences. Government officials have said that enforcement focuses on operators, advertisers, promoters and financial backers rather than on individual players.

In practice this means:

  • websites and apps of betting operators are blocked under the IT Act; by January 2026 the total number of blocked betting and gambling sites had passed 7,800;
  • banks and payment service providers must stop transactions linked to online money games, so UPI and card payments to such sites can be declined or reversed;
  • influencers, Telegram channels and websites that advertise betting sites can face criminal cases.

Not being the target of prosecution does not mean playing is safe. A player depositing on a blocked offshore site has no legal protection if the money is lost, the account is closed or the payment is frozen.

Is there a Mostbet India official site?

No. Searches like "mostbet india official" or मोस्टबेट in Hindi often lead to pages that call themselves the official Mostbet India site. None of them is licensed in India, because no licence for online money games exists under the new law. Such pages are usually affiliate sites or outright copies created to collect deposits and logins.

Real-money fantasy and rummy platforms that used to advertise heavily during IPL seasons switched to free contests or stopped paid games after the Act was passed. If a betting site still runs aggressive cricket promotions aimed at India, that alone is a sign it operates outside Indian law.
